Urban Wilderness are proud to work in partnership with the Canal & River Trust running creative activities that engage children, families and communities with urban canals.

This March we were invited to Finsley Wharf, Burnley, a section of canal that is being relined and developed into a family friendly activity centre. The open day was an opportunity for the local community to find out more about the work that Canal and River Trust are undertaking in the area.

It was a cold and drizzly day but that didn’t put families off and we had a steady stream of visitors joining in with our activities. Young people transformed a pile of cardboard boxes into picnic dens, boats, animals and even costumes! We shared some basic ceramic techniques and children collected moss to turn their pots into magical mini gardens to take home.

There were canoeing and fishing activities as well as guided tours of the space. We brought along our cameras and a new portable printer so that children could document the space and take away a personalised postcard to remind them of their day at Finsley Wharf!

It was great to see so many people supporting their local area and the work done by the Canal & River Trust.
