Sutherland Creative Freedom
Cultural Leaders Programme
Urban Wilderness CIC were commissioned by PICL to deliver the Creative Freedom Cultural Leaders Programme at Sutherland Primary School during 2024–25.
The project worked with a small group of children in care, supporting them to take on leadership roles within a whole-school creative programme. Through shared cultural experiences and practical making, the group developed confidence, identity and a sense of pride in shaping their school environment.
During the summer term, Cultural Leaders explored their school grounds using photography, drawing and sound recording before visiting Liverpool to experience public art and museums. These encounters helped the group reflect on how creativity can transform shared spaces and communicate belonging.
Building on this research, the Cultural Leaders developed a bold visual language using colour, pattern and simple symbols. They tested painting and stencil techniques on reclaimed wooden boards and then led workshops with pupils across the school. Every child took part in decorating sections of pallet fencing, ensuring the final installation represented the whole school community.
The finished work created a bright, welcoming display at the school entrance, celebrating collective creativity and the leadership of the children who shaped it. The programme demonstrated how child-led cultural activity can strengthen confidence, visibility and care within a school setting, while building staff confidence to work creatively outdoors.
