The Moony Club

Creative Consultation & Cultural Action in Longton

The Moony Club began as a socially engaged consultation in Longton, funded by Arts Council England. The project invited local residents, families and stakeholders to imagine new possibilities for public space and explore how creativity might support Longton’s regeneration.

Inspired by the 1850s description of Longton as a “flourishing market town” and the inventive spirit of the Lunar Society, the Moony Club approached industrial heritage through play, folklore and collective imagination.

The Zazzer-Zuzz Theory

At the heart of the project was the Zazzer-Zuzz Theory — a fictional creative force said to keep town centres alive. Public boards and performative encounters introduced this idea on the streets of Longton, encouraging passers-by to look more closely at their town and share what they believe gives it life, joy and potential.

These early interactions laid the foundation for deeper engagement, making it easy and enjoyable for people to get involved.

Exploring Longton Through Movement and Making

As the project grew, we designed activities that helped us understand how people experience local spaces:

  • Buggy Walks through Longton’s historic park, revealing who feels welcome and what barriers exist.

  • Photo Walks that celebrated Longton’s architecture and encouraged residents to notice the town with fresh eyes.

Meanwhile, a festive photobooth and film screening inside the historic Central Methodist Church animated a landmark building, building new connections between long-term residents, families and community groups.

Creative Interventions Across the High Street

Responding to consultation feedback, Urban Wilderness delivered a series of public interventions that tested new forms of social activity in Longton, including:

  • Lunchtime karaoke

  • A pop-up temperance bar

  • Two artist commissions

These actions demonstrated how small creative moments can shift atmosphere, create belonging and reintroduce joy into everyday public space.

A New Chapter: The Moony Club CIC

In December 2022, the Moony Club became a Community Interest Company. The CIC now works with local people to deliver:

  • community-led cultural programming

  • culture-led urban regeneration

  • a welcoming creative space in a Longton shop unit

The Moony Club continues to champion imagination and collective action as tools for shaping Longton’s future.
