By a Thread – Becki Kremer

Wastelands artist development commission

By a Thread is a textiles installation by illustrator Becki Kremer, combining traditional embroidery stitches with hand-cut felt applied to transparent netting. The work takes the form of a contemporary textiles doublet incorporating the poetic lines:

To her fair works did Nature link
The human soul that through me ran
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man

—quoted from William Wordsworth’s Lines Written in Early Spring.

The doublet was temporarily suspended from tree branches in Central Forest Park, where natural light, wind, and movement animated the piece. Its delicate construction and placement in the landscape highlight themes of fragility, connection and the intertwined relationship between humanity and the natural world.
