The Pig Walk Parade: a creative internship of discovery by Diana Abankwah

During March 2023 I shadowed the Urban Wilderness team as a Creative Intern and was included in the creative team behind the Pig Walk Carnival, working towards the creation of costumes and props for the carnival.

I experienced the creation of a carnival and the power of working with the local community to make something for us all. I worked in a hub of creativity that offered a safe space to all who walked through its doors.

Costume director Deb Rogers led workshops that were illuminating, enriching and collaborative in nature, with all ideas being encouraged and brainstormed as a group. Discovering the magic of Plastazote foam, the main component in carnival costuming, flowery props and masks, was an adventure in itself!

As a workshop facilitator, I picked up skills that showed me how the most impressive of props can be created using simple skills that can easily be replicated by almost anyone in the right environment.

Working with volunteers towards a common goal in the Moony Club was a wonderful experience. I worked in a supportive and nurturing environment, with people of all age, walks of life and abilities. It was clear to see how creating together empowered people both emotionally and psychologically. Professionally, this experience helped me see how I, as an artist and teacher, can create such nurturing environments and channel healing into the creative arts for and with others.

During my internship I was invited to share my creative goals with Isla, Laurel and Jenny - a team passionate about artist empowerment - who provided me with space and support to discuss growing my development as an artist, shaping myself as a creator, and the ins and outs of accessing funding that could empower my creative development.
