“Where Are the Trees? Where Are the Birds?” New Skyworks Commission

We are thrilled to introduce light and colour artist Raphael Daden, who we have commissioned to create new work for our Skyworks Canopy space in front of The Moony Club in Longton. His piece, titled “Where Are the Trees? Where Are the Birds?”, invites us to reflect on the potential impact that natural elements in urban spaces could have on our wellbeing and experience of ‘place’. The piece, designed by Daden, will be co created with the community over a series of Wednesday workshops and installed in November.

About the Artist: Raphael Daden

Raphael Daden is a Nottingham-based sculptor who has been captivating audiences around the UK with his innovative use of light for over a decade. Working primarily with materials like resin, acrylic, and glass, Raphael combines these elements with raw lighting such as LEDs and neon to create mesmerizing sculptures that bring the natural world into urban environments. His work has been featured in numerous public art commissions, gallery exhibitions, and Arts Council-funded projects across the UK and internationally.

Raphael’s approach to art is rooted in the belief that light and colour have the power to transform mood, atmosphere, and meaning. In a world oversaturated with electric lights and neon signs, his sculptures engage with the inherent beauty of light detached from commercial uses. His work in public spaces, like the upcoming Skyworks installation, offers communities the chance to interact with contemporary art in meaningful ways, often transforming ordinary areas into extraordinary experiences.

The Skyworks Installation: A Canopy of Light

Urban Wilderness has commissioned Raphael to create an artwork that will transform not only the Skyworks Canopy but also the ground and walls below it, offering shoppers a playfully transformative experience. The installation draws inspiration from a natural canopy of trees, inviting reflection on the question: “Where are the trees in Longton town centre?”. Through light and colour, the artwork will evoke the presence of trees and birds that are missing from the urban landscape, encouraging shoppers to consider the potential impact that increased nature in urban landscapes could have on city life.
